In the past, it was the center of Madeira's whaling industry. It was banned in 1981, and the waters around Canical have now become a marine mammal sanctuary. It is illegal to kill whales, seals and dolphins here today. The office of the old whaling company has been transformed into a very interesting Museum of Whaling (Museu de Baleia), and if you watched John Huston's film Moby Dick (1956), you might recognize some of the local scenery.

Santana

These houses were built back in the 16th century, they were intended mainly for sleeping, bathrooms were located far from the house. There are straw stalls for cows scattered along the slopes and valleys, and fruits, vegetables, and willows grow in abundance here.

IIhea da Camara de Lobos

In the chapel of St. Nicholas, 15th century, very interesting decorations have been preserved. Admire Camara de Lobos, it is the highest sea cliff in Europe.

Machico

When the Portuguese first settled on the island, it was divided into two parts. Funchal was the center of the western part, and Machico was the east side. Unlike Funchal, Machico is developing slowly and quietly, it is an agricultural area. Here you will see the beautiful 15th-century Igreja Matriz church building, as well as the beautiful chapels of Miracles (Capela DOS Milagres).

Golf is very popular on the island of Madeira. Santo da Serra Golf Club was originally designed by Robert Trent Jones and currently contains 3 nine-hole golf courses. A new club with all kinds of facilities was opened in 2000. There are other golf courses located on the island, including the recently completed Estalagem Do Santo.

Cable car

You will enjoy a cable car ride to the old part of Funchal. You can go to Monte Carlo, which is located next to the tropical gardens of Caminho Das Babosas. The journey will take about 30 minutes and will give you a sense of the beauty of a unique bird's-eye view of the city and the surrounding hills.
